Summertime, French-style

Every Wednesday afternoon
a sleepy Breton village reawakens,
pivoting around its central ‘Halles’,
next to its church.

Where long tables and live music
are adorned by couleure locale
who detour via the local ‘Bistrot’,
to get their drinks for 1.50: canteen prices almost.

Where the table serving ‘assièttes’ with local produce
took six people more time to set up than to sell out.

Sun-kissed, relaxed, they all seem to know each other,
warmly embracing friends and pulling up chairs.

If you’d stay longer,
you could write a book about each of them:
the French seem to age beautifully.

Trinité-sûr-mèr

It had been 35 years since I was in this Atlantic harbor.
In fairness, it hadn’t changed, as all
the good stuff was still there.

Busy promenade, bustling with families,
Cars and bikes on display
Great views on the mussle banks,
Delicious seafood, (actual food-porn sorry-not-sorry)
and impeccable ice cream shops.

Always visit the local markets
The once French-speaking-only market men
recognise “lekker” (tasty) and advise to store nougat
“niet in de ijskast” (not in the fridge).

Amazing how much merchants set aside
what must be an inate dislike
of foreigners
but they bring the coin
so they smile
and speak
your
language

Vannes is very pretty, a city in the South of Brittany, France.
Medieval streets, but much lower building than in Italy.
Where many small shops are stocked with care for detail.
