Soundtrack to my life
Two years ago I got a Korg SV-2 to support learning how to play the piano.
at 50+ picking this up is harder than as an 10 year old, perhaps.
so…A false start with an app,
a proper restart with a weekly tutor at my place
a lot of practice on music from Dirk Maassen
and baby steps in composing my own melody. This song has a meandering melody,
choosing from chord progressions and varying tonality
unusual perhaps,
as only my ears and hands,
guidance from my tutor
and mostly trial and error
got me to this result.
It’s like a musical score
of how I felt for a while
a musical self portrait if you like
of emotions that have been bubbling and burning.
Enjoy.Maastricht, 16 sep 2023

Summer in Maastricht
The car, the gentleman and his dog were all impeccably preserved oldies.
Very impressive sculpture, supporting the awareness for people on the verge of killing themselves. Lots of sunflowers in support of the cause.

Summertime, French-style
Every Wednesday afternoon
a sleepy Breton village reawakens,
pivoting around its central ‘Halles’,
next to its church.Where long tables and live music
are adorned by couleure locale
who detour via the local ‘Bistrot’,
to get their drinks for 1.50: canteen prices almost.Where the table serving ‘assièttes’ with local produce
took six people more time to set up than to sell out.Sun-kissed, relaxed, they all seem to know each other,
warmly embracing friends and pulling up chairs. If you’d stay longer,
you could write a book about each of them:
the French seem to age beautifully.Questembert, France 26 July 2023

Trinité-sûr-mèr
It had been 35 years since I was in this Atlantic harbor.
In fairness, it hadn’t changed, as all
the good stuff was still there.Busy promenade, bustling with families,
Cars and bikes on display
Great views on the mussle banks,
Delicious seafood, (actual food-porn sorry-not-sorry)
and impeccable ice cream shops.21 July 2023, Trinité-sûr-mèr, Brittany, France.

When in France…
Always visit the local markets
The once French-speaking-only market men
recognise “lekker” (tasty) and advise to store nougat
“niet in de ijskast” (not in the fridge).
Amazing how much merchants set aside
what must be an inate dislike
of foreigners
but they bring the coin
so they smile
and speak

Medieval streets, but much lower building than in Italy.
Where many small shops are stocked with care for detail.Where the maritime life permeates everything
